Recycle Canton's Curbside Automated Recycling Program

In 2017, Canton instituted a new automated recycling program that replaced 18-gallon bins with 64-gallon carts.  The larger carts are equipped with lids to promote a cleaner community and have wheels to make getting recyclables to the curb easier and more convenient.  The goal was to increase the recycling rate by 25%.
As of March 2018, Canton has reached that goal!

Canton’s recycling service, Green For Life, spot checks recycling carts for contamination. Contamination occurs when non-recyclables are placed in the carts.

Acceptable items:

  • Household Plastics #1 through #7 (empty containers only)
  • Newspaper, Magazines and Catalogs (remove bags, strings and rubber bands)
  • Paper Milk or Juice Cartons (empty cartons only)
  • Junk Mail and Office Paper
  • Clear and Colored Glass (empty containers only)
  • Cardboard and Paper Bags (flatten cardboard and cut into pieces.)
  • Non-wax Coated Paperboard
  • Phone Books
  • Pots and Pans
  • Aluminum, Steel and Tin Cans (empty cans only)

Unacceptable items:

  • Plastic Bags
  • Styrofoam
  • Wire Hangers
  • Window Panes
  • Mirrors
  • Pyrex Dishware
  • Yard Waste
  • Food Waste
  • Electronic Waste
  • Paint, Pesticides, Oil and Cleaners
  • Waxed Cardboard
  • Needles or Syringes

Recycling loads with contamination are rejected from the recycling facility.  Canton is asking residents to be vigilant in their recycling efforts by keeping contamination out of recycling carts.

Failure to comply with Canton’s guidelines will impact the program going forward through increased rates, restricted materials lists, temporary recycling bans, or a combination of any of these.
